European Commission (EC) has recommended to the EU Council of Ministers to close the remaining four chapters in negotiations with Croatia. Croatia should join the EU on July 1, 2013. Croatia likely to join EU in 2013 European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso proposed the date on Friday and the EU Council of Ministers will have to accept it as well. “Today is a historic day for Croatia and the European Union,” Barroso said. Croatia started its accession negotiations with the EU in 2005. The EC president said that today’s decision was a “signal to both Croatia and the rest of the Southeast Europe” and added that the enlargement was working, that the EU was serious about the promises it had made and that structural reforms paid off. Barroso pointed out that the EC had had “difficult but fair” negotiations with Croatia and made sure that all conditions and criteria were fulfilled. EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding said earlier that the “European Commission will give Croatia the green light”. She pointed out that the last obstacles had been removed and that she did not believe a year ago that it would be possible. Zagreb
