Tens of thousands of protesters gathered outside government headquarters in Bucharest calling for the resignation of the government. The unionists from across Romania, are protesting against the announced salary and pensions cuts. In a rallying call the leader of the Cartel Alfa union, Bogdan Hossu, told the protesters, "We are not going to leave until they leave this building.” "We remind the government officials that when citizens are dying of hunger, they are justified to eat their leaders. If they are not able to lead, the should go. Down with the government!" Dumitru Costin, president of the Blocul National Sindical union encouraged the protesters to vote for a general strike. Unionist are threatening general strike in the public sector, starting May 31, if the government doesn't find alternatives to its 25 per cent salary cuts and the 15 per cent cuts in pensions and social benefits.
