Croatian President Stjepan Mesic told reporters in Zagreb today that the relations between his country and official Belgrade are "stagnating". "I cannot deny that all channels of communication are still open, but they are empty," Mesic told a regional conference, known as the Igman Initiative. "Croatian-Serbian relations stagnating" According to him, while regular, "routine" contacts between the two countries are being maintained, "what is missing is a discussion on mutual relations and the situation in the region". "And that is more than needed, especially today, when the mood in the region reminds of the early 1990s," he warned. Despite this reference to the era that saw a series of wars in the Balkans, the Croatian president continued to say that he is "not a pessimist", and that his warning came "in order no to repeat the past mistakes". "I cannot close my eyes to what is happening in our close neighborhood, nor can I downplay the significance of those goings-on. What I hear and see is not good for Bosnia-Herzegovina and the region," Mesic continued. According to him, the region's future lies in its stability and association with the EU, while NGOs can play a big role in these processes. Mesic also supported an appeal issued by the Igman Initiative to organize a summit of the Western Balkan countries. "Considering that all the regional countries are striving to become EU members, it would be useful to include the EU in these talks, because everything that happens in the southeastern part of our continent, reflects on the rest of it," the Croatian president was quoted as saying.
