U.S. ambassador: Many things concerning Libya unclear
There are many things that are still unclear, and I think we cannot comment on the details, said Scott and pointed out that it is best to focus on the facts. The two Serbian diplomats were kidnapped, are now dead and it is a great tragedy, said Scott, who immediately expressed his condolences to Minister Ivica Dacic and Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, as soon as he heard about it.
Secretary of State John Kerry was also in contact with Vucic and pledged continued cooperation in trying to find out all the details and to share information between our two services, said Scott.
We know that much. At this moment the most important thing is to give space to the families to grieve and to continue investigating the details. While that is ongoing, the facts, as I know them, are that two of your people were kidnapped, said Scott.
Serbian authorities have done everything in their power to locate and free them, said Scott.
According to him, Serbian authorities in that process shared with the special services of the United States information about a location where kidnappers were suspected of holding the employees of the embassy.
We did what we could to find out if they were there. We were not able to learn information, but what I can say is that the target that was attacked last Friday is not the same target that has been shared with us by Serbian security services, said Scott.
I can say that the target that we struck was under constant surveillance for hundreds of hours before the attack, and during the whole period there was no evidence that civilians were at that location, and certainly not foreign hostages, said Scott.
We still have to clarify the facts, he repeated, to find out as much as we can and it is important that our and Serbian experts share all the information they have, so that we can come to a final conclusion.
Scott, commenting on reactions from Serbia in recent days, said it was a shock for the Serbian people and the government and that the reactions he heard were logical.
There was an attack, and then they were informed that Serbian citizens were found on the site and that they were killed, so the reaction is normal. However, I think that there are still things that need to be clarified, said Scott.
The basic fact remains, stressed Scott, and that a terrible tragedy occurred, two citizens of Serbia are dead and we from the depths of our hearts express condolences to the families, their colleagues and the government of Serbia.
It takes time to heal wounds, said Scott and stressed the need to conduct a full investigation.
