SNS declares victory in early local elections in south

According to preliminary results announced by the municipal election commission (OIK), an SNS-led coalition has more than 60 percent of votes in Medvedja.

SNS declares victory in early local elections in south

OIK President Zoran Radenovic told Tanjug that the SNS-led list that also includes the Socialists (SPS) and the Pensioners (PUPS) has "between 60 and 65 percent," while the DS are "quite certainly left below the threshold."

Radenovic added that the Democratic Party led by Nagip Arifi "won more votes that the list of two Albanian parties - the Movement of Democratic Action and the Democratic Union of Albanians" - while "the Group of Citizens won less votes that the three lists he mentioned previously."

Meanwhile, the SNS declared victory in Medvedja, with party official Marko Djuric saying it would mean "a comprehensive revival and progress of this area," and that citizens trust the party and its leader Aleksandar Vucic the most "to preserve state and national interests."

B92 has learned from the SNS election HQ that the coalition led by the party has 59.7 percent, while the Group of Citizens for Gornja Jablanica has 13 percent of the votes.

Arifi's Democratic Party came in third, followed by Riza Halimi's Party of Democratic Action.

The Democratic Party (DS) has 3.8 percent.

Vucic congratulated all SNS members in Medvedja on the convincing victory in a telephone call, announcing "the government's help so that residents are better off."

The local SNS coalition list leader Nebojsa Arsic also told reporters that Vucic said "things would be a little better in Medvedja as soon as tomorrow, while with the government's help, they will make an effort to make things are much better soon."

10,450 citizens were eligible to vote in Medvedja, with about 53 percent of those turning out at the polling stations on Sunday.
