BELGRADE Serbian Parliament Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic hopes a deal will be reached with northern Kosovo Serbs regarding the implementation of the Brussels agreement. Stefanovic expressed hope that agreement concerning the Brussels document would be reached at the meeting with Kosovo Serbs that should be held on Tuesday. Speaker hopes “deal will be reached with Kosovo Serbs” “If necessary, we will stage a referendum so as to achieve national and state unity and if northern Kosovo Serbs would agree to participate in the implementation of the agreement after this and realize that this is the will of the majority - and I believe it is - then we should definitely call the referendum so as not to cause splits among the people and create gaps,” Stefanovic told reporters when asked whether the referendum would be held. He said he hoped northern Kosovo Serbs would agree to take part in the implementation of the agreement reached with Pristina because in his opinion, the document protected the interests of the country and its people. The speaker underscored that an agreement needs to be reached with northern Kosovo Serbs because the goal was to achieve national unity on such an important and crucial issue which concerned all citizens. “We need such political unity and if it calls for a referendum, then we support it,” he said and recalled that in formal terms, the Serbian parliament was in charge of calling the referendum. Stefanovic reiterated that the goal was to achieve an agreement with Serbs in the north and for them to realize that the government's actions served the interests of all citizens of Serbia, including those in Kosovo.
