BELGRADE Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic attended a commemoration to victims of Nazism and laid wreaths in the Jajinci Memorial Park in Belgrade on Saturday. He noted that criminals needed to be held responsible for their actions regardless of their ethnicity. Serbia wants stability, compromise, president says The president said that Serbia was a democratic country that was committed to cherishing its history, tradition and heritage but that it was also looking toward the future, reconciliation and strengthening of the joint life with all people. “Serbia expects other to think that way too. We do accept that they treat us as people who do not deserve their freedom in our own country,” Nikolic pointed out during the commemoration to dozens of thousands of people who were brutally killed in Jajinci during WWII. He underscored that no war, violence or crime had ever brought anything good to anyone and that therefore there was no excuse for crimes and aggression. According to the president, every problem should be solved through talks and compromise “because violence gives birth to violence”. “We want stability and compromise and we teach our children to respect all differences – religious, national and sexual,” Nikolic explained, adding that Serbia honestly wished that crimes would never happen again and that it would always remember the victims. “We need to find the strength to forgive and ask for forgiveness from those against whom some of committed crimes,” he said, adding that it was the only way to move forward and place Serbia among democratic and civilized nations. According to him, the Serbian people “has suffered the most but we still extend a hand of reconciliation, harmony and love among people”.
