Interior Minister Ivica Dacic met in New York with Assistant UN Secretary-General Dmitry Titov. The two discussed the participation of Serbian Interior Ministry (MUP) members in UN missions. Dacic: MUP to participate in more UN missions “Our police officers are in two peacekeeping missions, in Liberia and Haiti. We expressed a readiness to send larger police forces if necessary, even some smaller formed police units,” Dacic was quoted as saying. According to a statement from Serbian police, MUP, Dacic said that these are peacekeeping and civilian missions that have the task of helping citizens and training police. “For all that to happen, it is important to strengthen our current capacities, and our police must participate in various centers of training, such as in Vicenza, where we have been participating for years along with other police forces,” he said. According to Dacic, Titov thanked Serbian police for helping in Haiti and for all the messages of condolences coming from Serbia regarding the death of 90 UN peacekeepers in the Haiti earthquake catastrophe. Dacic said that they also talked about the UN mission in Kosovo. “We believe that it is necessary for the UN mission to continue to function based on Resolution 1244, because it is a key factor for keeping peace, stability and security and the safety of the citizens in Kosovo,” Dacic said. He added that the UN mission should be a guarantee that all other missions located in Kosovo will be status-neutral. Dacic headed to Washington on Tuesday night, where he attended a reception organized in his honor by Serbian Ambassador Vladimir Petrovic. The Serbian minister also met with U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, with whom he discussed infrastructure investments in Serbia regarding roads, highways and the possibility of American experts working on these projects. He also invited LaHood to visit Serbia, which the American official accepted. Dacic continues his U.S. trip on Wednesday with talks with CIA and FBI officials in Washington, according to MUP. Tanjug reports today that Dacic stated in New York that the UN mission in Kosovo and Metohija needs to continue operating under Resolution 1244 because it is the key factor in preservation of peace, stability, security and safety of citizens. This primarily applies to those who belong to the non-ethnic Albanian population, in order to have guarantees that all other missions coming to Kosovo and Metohija will be status neutral, Dacic said during his meeting with Titov, who is in charge of rule of law, security and peace-keeping missions.
