Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen said that Holland is currently talking with the Swedish EU presidency regarding Serbia’s EU integration. Verhagen said that Dutch officials are talking to EU officials currently regarding the issue of whether or not agreements between Serbia and the EU will be unfrozen at Monday’s EU Council of Ministers meeting—taking into consideration Hague Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz’s positive report on Serbia’s cooperation with the international court. Verhagen: EU searching for best solution EU officials will discuss on Monday “what the best way will be to, on one side support the positive steps which the Serbian government has made recently, and at the same time continue to pressure Belgrade to continue its cooperation with the Hague Tribunal,” Verhagen said. Asked by the Beta news agency whether it is realistic for Belgrade to apply for candidate status for EU membership soon if the interim trade agreement is unfrozen on Monday, Verhagen said that it is in Serbia’s best interest to “use all the elements which are already agreed on completely,” especially the visa abolishment decision. “Please, be content with what you already have instead of creating a situation in which we would tell you, ‘No,’” he added. “It is obvious that both elements—the positive cooperation of Serbia and the positive report of Brammertz, and the need for further pressure—will be important in making conclusions,” he added. Verhagen confirmed that he will be visiting Belgrade on December 16 to meet with President Boris Tadic, Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, along with other Serbian senior officials.
