The Pride Parade would have been impossible to secure completely and one of the extremists’ target was the Swedish embassy, said Interior Minister Ivica Dacic. Dacic told daily Blic that it would have been impossible to guarantee maximum security at the parade as it was not a question of a few extremists and 100,000 parade participants, but the other way round. IM: Extremists targeted Swedish embassy “Some of the members of these organizations were arrested, but you should understand that this wasn’t a case of five, ten or 20 people, but several thousand people who’d have run riot through the streets of Belgrade,” explained the minister. One of the targets was the Swedish embassy, where a reception had been laid on for the participants. “The police even found stones hidden in manholes. However, it wouldn’t just have been members of extremist organizations congregating in the streets of Belgrade, but, according to information from the intelligence services, members of the public too, who aren’t members of Obraz or the 1389 Movement,” Dacic said. “For all the criticism for calling off the parade, I’d have been much more responsible if a single drop of blood had been shed. I could have said ‘have the meeting’ and then had a bloodbath,” said the minister. ”4,500 police officers were due to be on duty at a cost of EUR 300,000. I’ll give you an example that illustrates what could have happened: on Sunday, there were 1,600 policemen on the streets, yet there was still an incident. An Australian national was attacked, and the suspicion is he was attacked because the attackers thought he’d come for the parade. So, it’s not possible to cover every centimeter of Belgrade,” the minister stated. Ivica Dacic (FoNet, archive)
