Serbian police (MUP) Directorate Chief Milorad Veljovic says that the state controls the situation in the south of Serbia. Speaking for Belgrade daily Politika, Veljovic rejected accusations from ethnic Albanian president of the Bujanovac municipality, Saip Kamberi, who accused the police of "conducting repression in the south". "No repression, south under control" Similar accusations, and demands that MUP withdraws its elite Gendarmerie force from the area, were heard yesterday from other local Albanian leaders. All this comes after a string of incidents, described as terrorist attacks by the authorities, that took place in the region close to the administrative line with Kosovo, known as the Presevo Valley. One incident saw unknown perpetrators fire an RPG at a Gendarmerie patrol, injuring two officers, while another targeted a residential building with a powerful bomb. "I won't meddle in politics, but there is no repression, and there won't be any. We wish to guarantee safety to everyone. It is in the interest of the people in the south of Serbia to understand that the Gendarmerie is there to guarantee their safety," Veljovic told the newspaper. He also stated that MUP has video recordings that show an arms smuggling operation, including weapons being packed and transported from Kosovo. "All the perpetrators have been identified, among them a KPS [Kosovo police service] member. We will send the video to EULEX so that they can undertake measures. This shows MUP's determination to make the Ground Safety Zone secure, but also to point out to the citizens of southern central Serbia that the Gendarmerie and police are not their enemy, on the contrary. They are there to provide safety and to prevent acts of terrorism," Veljovic said. Asked whether there is any information as to who is responsible for the recent attacks in Presevo and Bujanovac, he stated that police has "some information about who the possible perpetrators could be, and about existence of terrorist groups in that region", and that MUP is monitoring their movements. "The danger that new attacks and provocations could occur is certainly there. Police and the Gendarmerie are aware of this. We have raised the alert to the highest level and have engaged more men who look after security," Veljovic revealed. A file photo of Milorad Veljovic (FoNet)
