Italy is maybe the biggest advocate of Serbian EU integration and will continue to be till the very end, says Italian Ambassador to Belgrade Alessandro Merolla. In a text published in the Wednesday issue of Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti, Merolla says that Italy was one of the first countries to take the side of a democratic Serbia, “which was able to free itself from (Slobodan) Milosevic's vice-like grip.” "Italy is biggest champion of Serbia's cause" “Since 2000 until today, the Italian Directorate General for Development Cooperation has assisted Serbia with more than EUR 200mn, and Italian industrial investments exceed those of any other country, not only in terms of scale, but also quality,” he points out. “Banks, insurance companies, big enterprises, small and medium-sized companies—Italian businessmen are ubiquitous in Serbia,” the ambassador stresses. “We have also been very touched by the warm welcome that Italian language and culture have received in Serbia, of which the Italian Palace, a complex housing the Italian Culture Institute and other important institutions of this country, is a shining example,” he added. “Therefore, it is no accident that, today, Italy is maybe the biggest supporter of Serbia's European pathway and will continue to be so until the very end—until Serbia becomes part of the Union,” Merolla underlined.
