Rehn added that the EU was paying close attention to political developments in Serbia, voicing hope that the Parliament would today vote for the government.

“I will soon personally visit Serbia not only to study the government program but to meet with new leaders and establish the degree of Serbia’s determination and resolve to co-operate with the Hague Tribunal,” he said.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier confirmed EU’s optimistic note regarding the formation of a democratic post-election coalition in Serbia saying that the EU stood by its promises to offer Serbia prospects of a European future.

Following the meeting of EU ministers in Brussels, High EU Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana said that he encouraged creation of a pro-European government in Serbia without any imposition.

“I would like to see the new government take up office as I tend not to impose myself upon internal affairs of Serbia or any state,” he said.

As for the Visa relaxation and readmission agreements, Tanja Miščević of the Government’s EU Integrations Office confirmed Monday that the signing of the finalized agreements the European Commission had postponed last week due to political circumstances in Serbia woud take place in Brussels on May 16.

“Weekend of good news”

British Ambassador to Serbia Steven Wordsworth has said that Great Britain is overwhelmed with the fact that Serbia was close to forming a democratic government.

According to him, the official London is looking forward to swearing in of the cabinet and its ministers, seen as a prelude to Serbia’s European integration talks.

“With Serbia’s triumph at the Eurovision Song Contest and Ana Ivanović’s victory in Berlin tennis tournament, this has been a weekend filled with good news with respect to Serbia,” the British Ambassador said.
