UN mission will not visit Serb enclaves

However, the Serbs living in Kosovo doubt that the mission’s report will have tangible results.

Oliver Ivanović, one of the leaders of the province’s Serb population, told B92 he was disappointed over the decision not to send the mission to the Serb enclaves in Kosovo, in his words rendering the visit “tourist” in nature.

Serbs living in the enclaves have announced they would travel to the administrative border with Serbia proper to meet the mission’s members and tell them face to face about the conditions under which they are forced to live.

“Considering that the Security Council delegation will only spend one day here [in Kosovska Mitrovica], our conclusion is that their intention is not to determine the facts about Kosovo and witness firsthand the living conditions of the Serb population here, but rather to reaffirm what they already have in writing, in the special representative’s reports,” Ivanović said.

Ivanović said that he and his colleagues therefore decided to ask the mission members to spend the day visiting the enclaves instead.

“Instead of talks and sterile political statements, something they will encounter in the meetings, I think it will be much more important for the mission to meet with ordinary people in Staro Gracko, Orahovac, Velika Hoča, or any other enclave where people encounter hardship,” Ivanović said.

Meanwhile, Serbs forcibly displaced from the province have announced they will return during the mission’s visit.

Several dozen families plan to attempt to return to their homes as the Security Council delegation visits the province.

“We wish to demonstrate our willingness to return to our homes, to continue with our lives, halted eight years ago. At the same time we will demand our property back and safe return and stay in our homes,” displaced Serbs’ representative Goran Savović told journalists.
