Republic of Srpska (RS) Prime Minister Milorad Dodik has proposed the creation of a regional union for the energy sector. However, his initiative was met with “reserved approval.” Dodik proposes regional energy union According to Dodik, the union would include power companies of the Bosnian Federation, the Republic of Srpska, Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro. The purpose of the organization will be to increase efficiency in utilizing the countries’ energy potential. In an atmosphere of disintegrative processes, the initiative came as a surprise and was met with a great deal of interest. As Dodik explained, the organization would oversee the development of the energy sector and enable efficient usage of energy resources and potential. Montenegro officials welcomed the idea, deeming it exceptional, adding they would wholeheartedly back the initiative. The Serbian Energy Ministry also greeted the proposal, but the official reactions displayed were somewhat cautious. Energy Minister Aleksandar Popovic said that there was a lot to be done before the formation of such a body, stressing that the interests of its future members had to be clearly outlined. It has been announced that talks on the implementation of the project could start in September. However, it is unlikely that a final agreement will be reached soon, given that energy potential is under firm control of states’ administrations owing to its strategic significance.
