SMEDEREVO The police in Smederevo on Monday arrested 13 persons, while another one is still at large, on suspicion that they incurred damages of EUR 5.7mn to Zelezara. Police Director Milorad Veljovic told B92 that the suspects are believed to have been stealing steel scrap owned by the company, and in this "and other ways" illegally gained some EUR 5.7 million. 13 arrested for stealing millions worth of steel scrap This happened after the steel mill - previously U.S. Steel Serbia, and before that Sartid - once again became a state-owned company last year. According to Serbia's public broadcaster RTS, among the arrested are officials of the Smederevo-based Harsco Matals, and owners of several private companies. This happened after the steel mill - previously U.S. Steel Serbia, and before that Sartid - once again became a state-owned company last year.

According to Serbia's public broadcaster RTS, among the arrested are officials of the Smederevo-based Harsco Matals, and owners of several private companies.

They have been detained on charges of abuse of office.

Some 200,000 tons of steel scrap have been stolen from Železara Smederevo.
