Serbia is one of the states failing to meet all standards related to stopping human trafficking, according to the new U.S. State Department report on the issue. Serbia is a country of origin, a transit country and final destination of victims of international and local human trafficking, according to the State Department report, which was presented by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. State Dept. releases human trafficking report Serbia is a destination for victims of human trafficking coming Eastern Europe and Central Asia, who arrive there via Kosovo and Macedonia, and a transit country for victims coming from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia, who then move on to Western Europe, according to the report. Most of the identified victims last year were women and children. Women and girls, more than half of whom are minors, are trafficked for the purposes of sexual exploitation, while children, mostly Roma, are trafficked for sexual exploitation, forced marriage or panhandling, the document states. The report states that the Serbian government is investing significant efforts to combat this scourge, but that, nevertheless, it is failing to meet the basic standards for clamping down on this form of crime. According to the report, the main problem is charging and sentencing those involved in human trafficking activities from within the authorities themselves, and the State Department has called on the Serbian government to define procedures to identify potential victims. The Serbian government has also failed to transfer all documents related to such cases to the American experts. Unless these issues are addressed, Serbia could receive a negative evaluation in the next report, the State Department warned.
