Documents on refugees from the former Yugoslavia and on displaced persons living in Novi Sad have been stolen from the city’s social services. Vera Grkavac, the head of the city’s Social Welfare department, said that the offices of the Commission for Refugees had been broken into two nights ago and that two computers had been taken. Documents on refugees, IDPs stolen “Computers were stolen, but the databases are protected, so that there is no need to panic,” Grkavac said. “The police were notified immediately, and an investigation was conducted in order to see what they got. We’re certain the perpetrators will be caught,” she said. Media report that the database contains data on over 250,000 refugees, but Grkavac said that there were several different databases, with many of the same names. She said that an insurance company had been billed for compensation. Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic said it was a serious problem when the state could not protect data of a personal nature, because this information could easily fall into the wrong hands. “Our authorities must understand the responsibility that goes with handling personal information and keeping it secret, and that is why it is essential to increase accountability for ensuring security and preventing unauthorized people gaining access to the data,” Jankovic underlined.
