U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton initiated negotiations about Miladin Kovacevic’s case, writes Belgrade daily Blic. Clinton reportedly instigated the talks between U.S. Ambassador Cameron Munter and Serbian government officials. Clinton initiated compensation talks? The newspaper carried New York Post claims, which cite a high official in the U.S. administration. Although official statements by the U.S. continue to claim that they will not stop prosecuting Kovacevic, Justice Ministry State Secretary Slobodan Homen told Blic that “Kovacevic’s trial in Serbia will begin in the next few months.” “I’m sure that Kovacevic will be tried in Serbia. The trial should begin in the next few months,” claimed Homen. He added that “everyone must answer for their actions.” “Serbia is capable of conducting a trial in all cases, and especially in the case of Kovacevic. Serbia and the U.S. have to repair relations and that’s the only way. The American government already turned over some of the case against Kovacevic, which referred to falsifying identity papers, and we will soon be given the rest of the charges,” he said. The state secretary added that one bar fight rarely strains relations between two countries. “The problem is not in the fight, but rather in the fact that our consul violated the Vienna Conventions,” explained Homen. Asked why exactly the government had singled out a figure of USD 1mn, he answered that he is not at liberty to speak about the matter. The media in Belgrade said last week the government was prepared to pay a total of USD 1mn in compensation in order to resolve the impasse in the case. Hillary Clinton (FoNet, archive)
