Infrastructure Minister Milutin Mrkonjic said that the Bar port is interesting to Serbia because it represents access to the sea for the country. “Serbia has a political interest in having access to the sea, but I claim that the basis of that idea is the economic interest of Serbia,” Mrkonjic told Podgorica daily Pobjeda. “Access to sea in political interest of Serbia” He said that the Serbian government does not want to and does not have the ability to participate in the tender of the port with its own money, which is why a consortium of Serbian companies was formed in order to participate. “These are large companies—MK Group, Sartid, Victoria Group and Delta, among others, which have an obvious interest in the transport of their products and merchandise through the Bar port,” Mrkonjic said, adding that transport through the Montenegrin port will be much more effective and cheaper than through any other regional port. Mrkonjic said that Serbia intends on building a highway from Belgrade to Boljare in the next five years, worth EUR 1.5bn, and investing EUR 250mn in the reconstruction of the Belgrade-Bar highway. “With the Montenegrin projects going on at the same time, a joint and effective traffic system will be secured for tying together southern and central parts of Europe,” he said. Mrkonjic added that the reservations in the Serbian public regarding the highway to Montenegro and the reconstruction of the highway and purchase of the Bar port, all come from “non-experts or those motivated by political interests,” stating that these are “vital” interest for Serbia.
