World Bank office chief in Serbia Simon Gray criticized the government’s measures taken thus far for decreasing budget spending. “The government has already taken emergency measures in order to decrease budget spending—it has frozen wages and pensions and decreased capital work and other discretional expenses. However, these measures will not be sustainable in the long-term,” Gray told daily Blic. WB official says measures are “unsustainable” He said that the report of the World Bank entitled “How to do Less with More,” looks at reforms from the ground up in key public sectors, which include health and education, but also the pension system in Serbia, social aid, infrastructure—roads and railways, and subsidies. Asked whether he believes that the government is showing progress in efforts to reform the public sector, especially the “big spenders” such as the pension system, and the education and health sectors, Gray said that the government has started in some cases new initiatives for reforms of the main parts of these sectors. “Whether they enough or not will depend on how successful the government will be in implementing them,” he said. Gray added that it is “extremely important not to decrease social programs for the poor in times of crisis.”
