Serbia will invest EUR 4.14bn in improving the railway line parallel to the Corridor 10 highway, daily Politika states. The daily also writes that talks with financial institutions regarding the reconstruction of Corridor 10 will begin in the fall. EUR 4bn for faster railways Along with the EUR 1.7bn that will be allocated for finishing the infrastructure on Corridor 10, EUR 4.14bn will be invested in the railway, Politika states, citing sources in the government. The money will be needed for major work with a view to increasing the speed of trains traveling in Serbia to 160 kilometers per hour. Other countries around the region have already addressed this matter, with trains in Hungary traveling up to 200 kilometers per hour, the same as trains traveling between Athens and Thessaloniki, and Sofia and Plovdiv. Croatian trains have reached the 160 mark, while Turkey is building a line between Istanbul and Ankara that will enable travel of 200 kilometers per hour. Until then, Serbian Railway will continue having to pay fines for trains transiting through Serbia and arriving late at their destinations. The fines for such tardiness amount to some EUR 20mn a year.
