Agriculture Minister Sasa Dragin says the biggest agricultural reforms in Serbian history lie ahead in the next four years. “What we do in the next four years will, to a great extent, decide the future of our agriculture, villages, and farmers. There are areas of agriculture where no reforms have even been begun…while of the 50 most important systematic laws for agriculture, only six have been passed,” Dragin told daily Vecernje Novosti. "Agricultural overhaul lies ahead" The minister said that the aim was to help farmers to sell their produce at realistic prices, but also to join forces, as it was not rational for every farm to have its own tractor, combine harvester, etc. Moreover, by joining forces they would become stronger and more serious negotiators with buyers, said the minister. “One of the first steps to be taken will be a reassessment of all monopolies in agriculture, and at the same time, we’ll also focus on getting Serbian agriculture involved in the world market with a view to stabilizing prices,” he explained. According to Dragin, the next task would be to maximize profit in plant production. “That’s why we’ll tighten control of the quality of fertilizers and seeds, and we also plan to offer increased support to the introduction of irrigation systems,” said the minister. He said that direct subsidies to registered farmers, a policy introduced by the previous government, had given good results, and that it would continue, though in a more streamlined form. “I also hope we’ll soon meet the conditions for opening European funds, without which there can be no agricultural development,” Dragin underlined.
