Aleksandar Popovic says that a Serbian-Russian gas pipeline construction company will be created in May. In an interview with Biznis magazine, the mining and energy minister said that the energy agreement with Russia had never been in any doubt, and that it would be ratified as soon as a new parliament was formed, which he expected to happen by May 25. Serbo-Russian gas company by May 25 Popovic said that he had not had any contact with Russian Energy Ministry officials since the dissolution of parliament, but a proposal for the formation of a work group had been sent to Russian officials. The work group will monitor the implementation of the agreement so that no time is wasted. “I expect a meeting of the group at the end of March or beginning of April,” the minister said. Asked whether he could reveal what route the South Stream pipeline would take, Popovic said that the new company, which will be formed by Srbijagas and Gazprom, will conduct a feasibility study to define the final route of the pipeline through Serbia. Serbia and Russia signed an energy agreement for cooperation in the fuel and gas industries on January 25, 2008, which stipulated the joint construction of part of a Russian gas pipeline through Serbia and the Banatski Dvor underground gas reservoir. The sale of the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS) was envisaged by a protocol signed the same day. The agreement has yet to be given to parliament for ratification.
