Infrastructure Minister Velimir Ilic said in Nis Friday that Serbia could finish work on Corridor 10 in four years. The work will continue on the construction of a highway along the pan-European Corridor 10, toward the border with Macedonia and Bulgaria, the minister told reporters. Serbian stretch of Corridor 10 by 2011? The highway toward Bulgaria is divided in two parts, the project has been designed and revised, and tenders will be called by the end of this month, Ilic said, speaking at the opening of the 14-km highway stretch around Nis, from Komren to Prosek. The first tender will be for the construction of a 24-km road that will bypass the Sicevacka gorge, and immediately after that for a section from the gorge to Bulgarian border, the minister said. Domestic companies are interested in building the section bypassing the gorge. They would invest their own money, which the state would refund in 10 to 15 years as agreed, Minister Ilic specified. "There is no reason why they should not get this job, if their offer is the most favorable," Ilic said. The deadline for the completion of the two highway sections is four years, but it remains to be seen how much the state will be able to earmark annually from the privatization funds, the minister said, expressing confidence that these funds will be sufficient to finish works on schedule. "Preparations have been completed for a tender for the section from Leskovac to the border with Macedonia, which would also be completed in four years," Ilic said. The section toward Bulgaria could not be built through concessions because of the non-feasible traffic frequency, of only 4,000 vehicles per day, so the state has decided to finance this stretch with its own funds. As estimated earlier, the value of the construction of this part of the Corridor 10 is some EUR 430mn.
