Lava spews from Mount Etna, Airport restrictions imposed: Tourists face travel chaos PHOTO
Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) - Etna Observatory - said today that a new vent has opened on Mount Etna in the Valle del Bove, at an elevation of between 2,200 and 2,350 meters, from which lava has begun to flow.
The eruptive activity had an immediate impact on Catania Airport, and the airport operator, Società Aeroporto Catania (SAC), ordered the closure of the airspace corresponding to sectors B1 and B2.
Arrivals were limited to five aircraft per hour until 2 p.m. today, while there were no restrictions on departing flights, SAC said. The airport operator urged passengers to check the status of their flights directly with their airlines before traveling.
