Today is D-Day: 700,000 people take to the streets; Total chaos expected PHOTO
Between 500,000 and 700,000 demonstrators are expected to take to the streets in Paris region during protests scheduled for today in several French cities, alongside a general strike called by trade unions, Territorial Intelligence Directorate (DNRT) reports.
According to the same report, today has been classified as a "high-risk" day, French television channel BFM reports.
The report warns that today's protests could cross a "new threshold" of violence, particularly in city centres.
On Tuesday, a map published by the CGT trade union indicated that 244 demonstrations would take place across France today.
Leading national trade unions from both the public and private sectors, as well as university and high school students, are expected to take part in today's general strike and mass protests across France.
Demonstrators and trade unions have announced that they are protesting against the rising cost of living, inflation, budgetary measures, and conditions in public services and the education system.
Disruptions to rail and air traffic are expected due to the strike. The national railway operator SNCF has announced the cancellation of around 10% of high-speed TGV trains, while major disruptions are expected on the Paris metro network.
Trade unions at energy companies and oil refineries have also announced work stoppages, which could affect fuel supplies.
