“The first is general mobilization—a large-scale mobilization in Russia. The mobilization of people from major cities, including, of course, Moscow and Saint Petersburg,” Volodymyr Zelensky added.
Offensive against Ukraine or an attack on the Baltics
According to him, such a mobilization would serve one of two goals.
“Why would they carry out such a large mobilization? To launch another offensive—a major offensive against Ukraine. Option ‘B’ is to conduct a smaller, parallel offensive, with lower costs and effort, somewhere it could be done with fewer combat forces. Why? Because some countries—for example, one of the Baltic states—are not prepared for strong resistance,” the Ukrainian president explained.
Zelensky stated that Russia’s “Plan A” includes “large-scale mobilization, restrictions on social media, and the launch of an offensive.”
“As for the location, I think they have several options. And here he (Putin) is observing what is happening with NATO countries. I believe that will determine the choice: whether they will intervene or not,” he said.
Asked whether an attack on the Baltic states would trigger Article 5 of NATO, Zelensky replied that he believes the alliance would have no other choice.
“I think not all countries may want to support the Baltic states, but in my opinion, NATO countries will have no choice—otherwise NATO will cease to exist. They will have to unite and respond to what Vladimir Putin could potentially do. Otherwise, they simply will no longer have an alliance,” Zelensky concluded.
