Moscow seethes: Will Berlin be targeted?

He wrote on his Telegram channel that there was no evidence of Russian involvement in the incident and that Germany, because of what he called false accusations, deserved to see military equipment production facilities supplying Kyiv targeted, RIA Novosti reported.

“Berlin has made accusations over an unproven attack on Leipzig Airport. Given the neo-Nazi, fiercely anti-Russian course of Germany’s current leadership, a fabricated act of sabotage is the weakest form of punishment for their sins. They deserve a direct strike on all German facilities producing military equipment for Bandera’s clique, and quite possibly on several other locations in Berlin,” Medvedev wrote.

A drone carrying an explosive device was found at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany in August, near Ukrainian cargo aircraft. It was later reported that a second drone had collided with an aircraft.

Ten days later, another drone was found in Kabelsketal, in the Saale district, and investigators also found explosives in that case.

Germany accuses Russia

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the German government believed that a Russian intelligence agency was responsible for the attempted bombing at Leipzig Airport.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul also announced additional measures, including the closure of Russia’s consulate general in Bonn on September 18, the termination of an agreement with the Russian House in Berlin, and tighter entry controls for Russian nationals.

Wadephul will also summon the Russian ambassador for talks, while pressure on Russia’s so-called shadow fleet will be increased.

“Germany is defending itself against its adversaries and will continue to decisively strengthen Ukraine,” Wadephul said.

Putin also weighs in

Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, accused Germany of planting evidence to blame Moscow for last month’s drone attack at Leipzig Airport.

“It is not clear why all this is being done. There is only one explanation: the need to confront an aggressive Russia. Where is the evidence? Well, they planted it,” Putin said at a news conference following his visit to Kyrgyzstan for a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), RIA Novosti reported.

He said that by making accusations against Russia, the German government was seeking to address domestic problems stemming from the decline in Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s approval ratings.

“As for the actions of the German authorities, I believe they are primarily linked to the domestic political situation. The chancellor is in a difficult position at home. He does not enjoy the trust of his citizens, and it is understandable why, because he is not defending national interests but trading them away. There are obvious economic mistakes, companies are shutting down, people are losing their jobs and living standards are falling,” Putin said.
