On Tuesday, an Iranian gunboat approached and challenged a U.S.-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz before it continued its journey, the British maritime security firm reported.

According to the company Vanguard Tech, during its passage through the Strait of Hormuz, about 30 kilometers north of Oman, the Stena Imperative was approached by three pairs of small armed boats belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

“The vessel is now being escorted by a U.S. warship,” the company announced.

The British Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which collects reports on threats to ships, confirmed the incident and stated that the authorities are conducting an investigation.

According to UKMTO, several small armed vessels attempted to contact the tanker via VHF radio, but the ship ignored the request to stop and continued on its planned route. The agency did not specify the nationality of the vessels involved in the incident.

The semi-official Iranian news agency Fars reported statements from unnamed officials claiming that one vessel entered Iranian waters without the necessary permits. According to them, the ship was warned and left the area “without any particular security incident.”

The Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for the global transport of oil and liquefied natural gas, has previously been the scene of several incidents.

A senior naval official of the Revolutionary Guard, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic of Iran, warned last week that the passage through the strait could be blocked if the United States launches an attack.

Tehran–Washington Relations

Tensions between Tehran and Washington have sharply increased in recent weeks. The U.S. has reinforced its naval presence in the Middle East, while President Donald Trump threatened an attack on Iran due to, as he stated, the violent suppression of recent mass protests across the country.

Separately, on Tuesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that he had instructed the foreign minister to “pursue fair and just negotiations” with the United States.

Trump has repeatedly stated that Iran wants to negotiate, citing the Iranian nuclear program as one of the key issues he wants resolved.

Washington has, on multiple occasions, negotiated with Tehran over the program, before Israel launched a twelve-day conflict with Iran last June.

At that time, Trump ordered the bombing of three Iranian nuclear facilities with special “bunker-buster” bombs, including the Fordow facility near Tehran, which is believed to be the center of Iran’s uranium enrichment program.
