Medvedev: We are not crazy!
Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev stated that Moscow has no interest in sparking a global conflict, just as it had no interest in launching the special military operation in Ukraine.
“Of course, we are not interested in a global conflict. We are not crazy. This has been said a hundred times. Who needs a global conflict?’', Medvedev said in an interview with TASS, Reuters, and the Vargonzo project, reminding that the Russian leadership has repeatedly warned the West and NATO countries, urging them to consider Russia’s interests and sit at the negotiating table.
According to him, the global situation could lead to a scenario where everything might get out of control at some point, and the risk of a global war is very high.
‘The new multipolar world consists of different countries, major poles, and important players. This certainly includes our country—the Russian Federation, the People’s Republic of China, India, and the countries of what we now call the Global South. It is clear that this is a completely new phenomenon, with its own legal subjectivity, as lawyers say, and a desire to participate directly in international relations, rather than indirectly through other countries,’ said the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council.
Medvedev stated that upon assuming the presidency, he was mentally prepared to press the nuclear button if necessary.
‘Anyone who agrees to run for and is elected president of a nuclear power cannot rule that out. As commander-in-chief, I naturally participated in all necessary training during that period, including training in handling nuclear weapons. But God forbid it ever comes to that', he added.
When asked by journalists about the most incredible forecast he could make for 2026, Medvedev said that the collapse of NATO and the return of the EU to buying Russian oil and gas would be beneficial for the entire planet.
‘Among incredible things, since you ask—for example, the European Union will apologize to the Russian Federation and again seek to purchase gas and oil. Or NATO will collapse due to a US withdrawal. Both would, in any case, be useful for our planet. Is it possible? Probably, like all incredible things, it is possible,’ Medvedev emphasized.
According to him, colonial tendencies toward a sovereign country like Venezuela were surprising.
‘The capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the Americans is a catastrophe in international law and undermines the entire system of international relations,’ Medvedev said, adding that he plans to publish a legal essay on the legal aspects of Maduro’s arrest.
Regarding Moscow-London relations, Medvedev stated that only a fundamental change in British policy could improve relations with Russia.
‘What the current British leadership is doing is a kind of furious, primitive Russophobia to boost its own electoral ratings,’ he said.
On Greenland, Medvedev said that US President Donald Trump’s desire to take control of the territory represents a serious challenge to Western unity.
‘I will not dwell on Greenland. Our president recently said that it does not concern us. Let the United States and Europeans handle it, but the whole matter is rather strange. Nothing like this has happened at least in the past few decades, but now it is happening. This truly represents a serious challenge to Atlantic unity,’ Medvedev said.
He also called the emphasis on Russia and China being a ‘threat’ to Greenland merely a scare tactic.
