Here are the terms of Trump's Greenland Agreement: No sale, instead…
The proposed Greenland agreement by U.S. President Donald Trump does not include the sale of the island to the United States, The Telegraph reported, citing well-informed sources.
Instead, the framework agreement negotiated in Davos would allow the United States to have sovereign control over military bases in parts of Greenland. In a proposal modeled after the United Kingdom’s agreement with Cyprus, the bases would be considered U.S. territory.
This would enable the U.S. to conduct military operations, intelligence activities, and training, while also facilitating local development, potentially including the mining of rare earth minerals.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated that in his meeting with the U.S. president, they did not discuss the key issue of Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland.
The Situation of Cyprus and the United Kingdom
Cyprus gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1960, but the former British Empire insisted on retaining two large areas where the British military bases of Akrotiri and Dhekelia are located. Under the provisions of the Zurich–London Agreement, these areas are legally British territory.
In May 2022, the Cypriot and British authorities announced the start of an agreement lifting restrictions on the development of the British military bases at Akrotiri and Dhekelia.
“He is very focused on what we need to do to ensure that this vast Arctic region, where changes are currently taking place and where the Chinese and Russians are becoming increasingly active, is protected,” he said in a television interview with Fox News on Wednesday evening.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Based on a very productive meeting I had with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework for a future agreement regarding Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic region. Based on this understanding, I will not implement the tariffs that were supposed to take effect on February 1. Additional discussions are ongoing regarding the Golden Dome in relation to Greenland.”
At the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21, Trump also emphasized that the United States will not use military force to establish control over Greenland.
