The invasion is ready

U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered commanders of his special forces to draft a plan for an invasion of Greenland. However, military officials are trying to dissuade him—proposing an attack on Iran instead.

Sources from the British newspaper say that the political “hawks” around the U.S. president, led by his adviser Stephen Miller, are so emboldened by the success of the operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro that they want to act quickly and seize the Arctic island before Russia or China make the first move.

British diplomats believe that Trump is also motivated by a desire to distract American voters from the state of the U.S. economy ahead of the midterm elections later this year, after which he could lose control of Congress to the Democrats.

However, such a dramatic move could potentially lead to the collapse of NATO

According to the sources, Trump asked the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) to prepare an invasion plan, but the Joint Chiefs of Staff are opposing it, arguing that such a move would be illegal and would not have the support of Congress.

“They are trying to dissuade Trump by discussing less controversial measures, such as intercepting Russian ‘ghost ships’ — a covert network of hundreds of vessels that Moscow uses to circumvent Western sanctions — or launching strikes on Iran,” one of the sources said, according to the Daily Mail.

Three scenarios

Diplomats have outlined what they describe as an “escalation scenario,” in which Trump would use force or “political coercion” to sever Greenland’s ties with Denmark.

One diplomatic memo also describes a “worst-case” scenario, such as one that could lead to the “destruction of NATO from within.”

“Some European officials suspect that this is the true goal of the hardline MAGA faction around Trump. Since Congress would not allow Trump to leave NATO, occupying Greenland could force Europeans to exit NATO. If Trump wants to break NATO, this could be the most suitable way,” the British newspaper source added.

According to a third, “compromise scenario,” Denmark would agree to give Trump full military access to Greenland while simultaneously denying the same access to Russia and China. Although the U.S. already has free access to the island, this approach would establish a firm legal basis.

“For domestic political reasons, Trump might start with the escalation scenario, which then shifts to the compromise scenario. European officials fear that this ‘opportunity’ for Trump will close during the summer before the midterms, so action is more likely sooner rather than later. The NATO meeting on July 7 seems like a natural moment to reach a compromise agreement,” the diplomatic note reads.

“Current concerns (about the invasion) are fueled by the most extreme positions coming from Miller. The U.K.’s stance will be crucial — whether it will stand firmly with European allies or break ranks (and support Trump’s approach),” it concludes.

It’s like dealing with a five-year-old

“Generals consider Trump’s plan for Greenland to be reckless and illegal.

That’s why they are trying to divert his attention toward other major military operations.

‘They say it’s like dealing with a five-year-old,’ a diplomatic source told the Daily Mail.

Meanwhile, diplomats from Nordic countries say intelligence data shows no presence of Russian or Chinese ships near Greenland, directly contradicting Trump’s usual explanation and justification for a U.S. takeover of the Arctic island. Many believe, however, that Greenland’s invaluable natural resources and its strategic importance for future northern sea trade routes, as Arctic ice melts due to global warming, are a far stronger motivation for Trump.

Two senior Nordic diplomats with access to NATO intelligence briefings told the Financial Times that there is no evidence of Russian or Chinese ships or submarines operating around Greenland in recent years.

‘I’ve seen the intelligence. No ships, no submarines,’ said one of the diplomats.
