Netanyahu speaks out: We are extending a hand of peace
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the United Nations Security Council vote to adopt a U.S.-proposed resolution approving the establishment of International Stabilization Forces in Gaza.
It concerns a 20-point plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Netanyahu stated that the plan will help end the rule of the Palestinian militant group Hamas and expand normalization.
On his official X account, Netanyahu praised Trump’s plan and the UN Security Council’s support, stating that the framework "will lead to peace and prosperity because it insists on the complete demilitarization, disarmament, and deradicalization of Gaza," which, according to U.S. President Donald Trump’s vision, will further integrate Israel with its neighbors and expand the Abraham Accords, reports the Times of Israel.
Netanyahu added that, under Trump’s plan, Israel is expected to immediately receive the remaining three deceased hostages in Gaza and to begin the process of disarming and demilitarizing the Gaza Strip and ending Hamas’s rule over Gaza.
"The leadership of President Trump will help the region achieve peace, prosperity, and a lasting alliance with the United States," he wrote.
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel is extending a hand of peace and prosperity to all its neighbors and calls on them to normalize relations with Israel and join in driving Hamas and its supporters out of the region.
According to the Times of Israel, to the surprise of the right wing, the UN resolution also supports the plan as a "credible path to Palestinian self-determination and statehood."
The Israeli portal notes that it is interesting that Netanyahu did not issue a statement welcoming the adopted resolution on his personal accounts due to political tensions within his coalition regarding the implications of the resolution on the future of Palestinian statehood.
Meanwhile, Palestinian Foreign Minister Warsen Agabekian Shahin stated that the adoption of the UN Security Council resolution supporting U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza is a necessary first step on a long road to peace, Reuters reports.
"The UN resolution is the first step on a long path to peace. This step was necessary because we could not start anything else before achieving a ceasefire," Shahin told journalists in Manila during a visit to the Philippines.
Shahin said that other issues still need to be resolved, including the Palestinian right to self-determination and potential Palestinian independence, and that the implementation of Trump’s plan must comply with international law.
She said that although Trump’s plan hints at possible Palestinian statehood, this issue could only be considered after the Palestinian Authority carries out reforms.
"As long as these elements are present, we are satisfied with this first step," Shahin emphasized.
The Palestinian Authority, based in Ramallah, had earlier welcomed the vote and stated that it is ready to participate in Trump’s plan, which does not clearly define the role of the Palestinian Authority and gives vague indications regarding statehood.
European and Arab countries have stated that the Gaza Strip must be under the authority of the Palestinian Authority and that there must be a clear path to Palestinian independence.
The Israeli government, which opposes the idea of an independent Palestinian state, rejects any involvement of the Palestinian Authority.
Yesterday, the Security Council adopted a resolution prepared by the U.S., which also approves the deployment of multinational security forces in Gaza and introduces an international protection mechanism for the territory devastated by two years of war.
