According to their latest forecast, deep Atlantic waves, fueled by record-warm sea surface temperatures, will bring waves of rain, wind, and warmer air across Western and Central Europe.

This “deep autumn” could lead to flooding and extreme weather conditions, especially in coastal areas.

The forecast, based on current observations and models, highlights typical autumn conditions over the North Atlantic: large upper-level troughs developing in the west, sending massive amounts of moisture and heat onto the continent.

“This will establish a prolonged period of unstable weather with rainy phases as the beginning of November approaches,” experts from Severe Weather Europe say, emphasizing the role of zonal Atlantic flow bringing warm air across Europe.

A key factor in this forecast is the sea surface temperatures, which are significantly above average for mid-autumn — a result of the hot summer and global climate change.

Sea temperatures around Europe range from 22–23°C in the western-central Mediterranean and west of the Iberian Peninsula toward the Azores, to lower and mid-10s°C in Western Europe, the North Sea, and the Baltic Sea.

These anomalies, especially pronounced in the western Mediterranean and around Scandinavia, increase atmospheric moisture and encourage the formation of stronger fronts.

Arctic air from Greenland will be pulled over the Atlantic, maintaining the strength of the waves and intensifying the jet stream to 130 km/h over Western Europe.

This will result in variable weather conditions: warmer periods will be interrupted by waves of colder air, but overall, November will begin with above-average temperatures.

The warm seas will “feed” frontal systems with additional moisture, bringing heavy rainfall across Western Europe.

From tonight through next week, increasing rain is expected over the mountains in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Scotland, western parts of the Iberian Peninsula, and southwestern Norway.

Extreme risks will also be present, reports Večernji list, which notes that a “bombastic cyclone” is expected to form.

This will bring strong winds of up to 130 km/h over the Atlantic and the Bay of Biscay, along with dangerous currents and high waves along the coasts of France, Ireland, and Scotland.

An additional factor is the weakened Hurricane Melissa, which has already devastated Jamaica and now contributes to the broader dynamics of the Atlantic.

In the Baltic region, warm sea anomalies could trigger heavier snow or rain events later in the winter.

In Europe, the most affected areas will be France, Ireland, and the British Isles, facing rain, wind, and flooding, while warm air waves from the Atlantic will reach Central and Eastern Europe, bringing milder conditions.

The Mediterranean will experience intensified rainfall due to the warm seas, and Northern Europe, including Scandinavia, can expect unstable conditions with potential for increased precipitation.
