Apocalypse in Haiti: Melissa destroyed everything in its path, at least 25 dead PHOTO/VIDEO
At least 25 people were killed after a river overflowed in Haiti due to Hurricane Melissa, said Jean Bertrand Subrème, the mayor of the southern Haitian coastal town of Petit-Goâve.
Subrème told the AP that 25 people were killed after the La Digue River overflowed due to the hurricane.
Subrème stated that dozens of houses were flooded and destroyed, and that people have remained trapped under the rubble since this morning.
He called on the government to assist in the rescue operation.
Hurricane Melissa, which struck Jamaica on Tuesday as a Category 5 hurricane, is one of the most powerful ever recorded in the Atlantic basin. In Cuba, 500,000 people have been evacuated due to the hurricane.
Melissa is also the strongest storm ever to hit Jamaica, surpassing Hurricane Gilbert of 1988, which struck the island as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 209 kilometers per hour.
