Coup carried out; Military takes power
A coup has taken place in Madagascar. The coup leader stated in an interview with the AP agency at his base that he is "assuming the position of president."
Colonel Michael Randrianirina, who led the soldiers’ rebellion that ousted President Andry Rajoelina, stated that he expects to be sworn in as the new leader of Madagascar within the next few days.
The military is taking over power in Madagascar
Randrianirina announced that the army is assuming control, effectively ending the protests against the former president and his government, which were led by members of Generation Z.
The protests reached a turning point on Saturday, when Randrianirina and soldiers from his elite military unit, CAPSAT, rebelled against the president and joined the demonstrations.
“We had to take responsibility because there was nothing left in the country—no president, no Senate, no government,” said Randrianirina.
The coup brought Rajoelina to the presidential palace
Rajoelina, who has been president since 2018, stated that he fled to a safe location fearing for his life after the soldiers’ rebellion.
Randrianirina stated that the new military leadership will quickly appoint a new prime minister to form a government, but did not provide a specific timeline.
It was the military coup in 2009 that originally brought Rajoelina to power as a transitional leader.
