"This marks the third such violation of EU airspace in days and further escalates tensions in the region," Kallas wrote on the X platform.

According to her, the EU stands in full solidarity with Estonia.

"I am in close contact with the Estonian government. We will continue to support our member states in strengthening their defences with European resources. Putin is testing the West's resolve. We must not show weakness," Kalas pointed out.

As the Err.ee portal reported earlier today, three Russian MIG-31 fighter jets entered the Estonian airspace in the area of Vaindloo Island without permission and remained in the Estonian airspace for almost 12 minutes.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia invited the Chargé d'affaires of the Russian Federation to Tallinn to express a protest and deliver a note regarding the violation of the country's airspace.

Earlier this month, Estonia had already called for a meeting with the Russian chargé d'affaires in Tallinn to express protest after a Russian MI-8 helicopter violated Estonian airspace near the island of Vaindloo.

NATO reacted promptly

NATO reacted immediately and intercepted the Russian aircrafts that violated Estonian airspace, Alliance spokeswoman Alison Hart said today at Platform X.

"This is another example of Russia's reckless behavior and NATO's ability to respond," Hart wrote, according to Reuters.

According to reports, the planes had no flight plans and their transponders were turned off.

At the time of the violation, the planes also did not have two-way radio communication with Estonian air traffic services.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia invited the Chargé d'affaires of the Russian Federation to Tallinn to express its protest and hand him a note regarding the violation of the country's airspace.

"Russia has already violated Estonian airspace four times this year, which in itself is unacceptable, but today's violation, during which three fighter jets entered our airspace, is unprecedentedly brutal," Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said.

As he said, Russia's increasing border testing and aggression must be faced with rapidly increasing political and economic pressure.
