Serbia is preparing for a dramatic meteorological weekend, as nature is set to deliver a real rollercoaster — after pleasant spring days, a sudden change in weather is expected. According to forecasts from the Republic Hydrometeorological Institute of Serbia (RHMZ), the country will face a mix of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and a sharp temperature drop in the coming hours and days.
“Calm before the storm” and afternoon shift
Friday starts mostly sunny, but this is only a temporary break, as cloud cover and local showers with thunder are expected later in the day. Winds will be weak to moderate, but in Vojvodina and mountainous regions they may become stronger from the south and southeast.
Morning temperatures range from 4°C to 13°C, while daytime highs will reach 22°C to 26°C. A yellow weather alert has been issued nationwide due to thunderstorm risk.
Warnings include:
- Lightning strikes that can endanger people and animals
- Disruptions to electrical devices and telecommunications
- Fire risk from lightning
- Heavy rain, flash floods, and strong winds causing possible damage
“Storm-geddon” – hail and intense thunderstorms
Saturday is expected to bring even more unstable weather. Rain and local showers will occur throughout the day, with the most severe conditions expected in the afternoon and evening, including intense thunderstorms, heavy rainfall in a short time, strong winds, and local hail.
“Water wall” and temperature drop
Sunday brings a major weather shift and a sharp cooling trend. Cloudy conditions with rain and a strong northwest wind are expected. Some areas may experience very heavy rainfall described as a “water wall.”
Most affected regions include:
- Banat District
- Braničevo District
- Bor District
- Zaječar District
In these areas, more than 30 mm of rain is expected within 24 hours. A yellow alert remains in effect.
Temperatures will drop significantly, with highs of only 13°C to 18°C.
Outlook
Monday will remain cloudy and cool, with occasional light rain in eastern and mountainous areas. The unstable pattern is expected to continue from May 19 to May 23, with ongoing local showers and thunderstorms across Serbia.
