Severe weather approaching; Interior Ministry issues urgent appeal to the public

The Ministry of the Interior's Sector for Emergency Management has issued a statement following the Serbian Hydrometeorological Institute's forecast of severe weather.

The ministry's statement reads in full:

"Members of the Ministry of the Interior's Sector for Emergency Management are on full alert, continuously monitoring the weather situation, conducting field inspections, and maintaining constant communication with local government units following urgent warnings issued by the Serbian Hydrometeorological Institute that unstable weather, accompanied by heavy rainfall, hail and strong winds, is expected to affect parts of Serbia in the coming hours.

Members of the Sector for Emergency Management are also coordinating with other relevant services to ensure the fastest possible response to any reports and the potential consequences of the severe weather, while providing the necessary assistance to citizens."

Following the high temperatures that affected most of Serbia during the day, severe weather struck western parts of the country in the evening, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, localized hail and gale-force wind gusts. The storm system has since continued moving toward other parts of the country.

"We urge citizens to follow official warnings issued by the Serbian Hydrometeorological Institute, avoid staying outdoors during the severe weather, refrain from parking vehicles under trees or other unstable structures, and immediately call 193 in case of danger or if assistance is needed."

RHMZ issues weather warning

The Serbian Hydrometeorological Institute (RHMZ) has warned that showers and thunderstorms expected across Serbia tonight and into Sunday, again on Sunday evening, and in central and southern Serbia on Tuesday afternoon and evening, will locally be accompanied by hail and strong to gale-force winds.
