Icy winter in Serbia: Meteorologist reveals how long temperatures will stay below zero PHOTO
Meteorologist Nedeljko Todorović stated today that winter weather, accompanied by low temperatures, snow, and rain, will persist across Serbia for another four to five days, adding that precipitation in the coming days will be lighter with partial clearings.
Todorović told Tanjug that rain can be expected on Friday afternoon and evening, as well as lower morning temperatures on Monday, ranging from minus four to minus 14 degrees, and in Belgrade between minus seven and minus 10 degrees.
"This cold winter period in Serbia will last for about ten days in total since it began. In the south, the cold spell and snowfall only started yesterday, so it will continue there for a few more days. After that, a change in the weather is expected," he said.
Todorović said that although in previous winters there were not enough days with snow and low temperatures, this is not an extreme weather event but weather appropriate for our climate, especially in January, and he emphasized that there was more snow in 2018 and 2019 than this January.
'Nothing unusual is happening here; we cannot change the weather overnight. There will be no significant changes in the coming decades, or even centuries,' the meteorologist stated.
When asked in which situations a red weather alert is issued and what it specifically means for citizens and services, Todorović said that each meteorological parameter has its own criteria for issuing a warning.
In this case, it is not just about temperature, but also the occurrence of rain that could freeze on the ground, which is why a certain level of alert is issued.
He noted that under these winter conditions, some kind of alarm or warning should be expected for certain meteorological phenomena, as was the case at the beginning of the first days of snowfall, when warnings concerned the amount of precipitation and the height of the snow cover.
'Citizens should behave according to the weather conditions, follow the media and RHMZ, and wear appropriate clothing and footwear. This is not an extreme situation; it may be a rarer occurrence for Belgraders, but it happens and there is no need to panic,' Todorović stated.
