Great Shanghai Address: 18b Omladinskih brigada, Belgrade Phone: +381-11-21-37-986 Working hours of the restaurant and kitchen: from noon to 11 p.m. City transportation: bus: 17, 18, 68, 73, 88, 610, 611 Menu: in Serbian, English, Chinese Staff speak: all three languages Vegetarian menu: yes Cuisine: Chinese Main courses: from 360 to 1,200 dinars Daily menu: yes, 460 dinars Non smoking area: yes The interior is divided in two levels: there is a table with self service on the ground level and a tiny, gloomy gallery on the upper level with just barely enough daylight so as not to be in complete darkness. From the table and for the price of 460 dinars, one can choose two main courses with a variety of accompaniments. Since we were not interested in a ready-made version of Chinese food, we ventured upstairs, got seated at rotating tables and tried to place an order. A rather indifferent waiter calmly informed us that the dishes we craved for – veal with five spices and dumplings with celery and dried meat – were either not available or take a long time to make. But, he gave us a big smile when we mentioned spring rolls and even congratulated us on our choice. It seems that these are not as nearly as good as the ones in Makao” – the filling is much smaller in quantity, with cabbage predominating. The soup with white mushrooms was clear and neutral, and the chicken pottage with corn and eggs is similar to the one served in local restaurants. The treat of the day came in a portion of veal in sweet sauce consisting of chocolate-colored shreds of meat slightly seasoned with lemon juice and no accompaniments what so ever. Chicken in curry sauce with veggies from the local market (peppers, onions, cabbage), and the fact that ordinary cutlery is in use (chopsticks not even an option) confirms that everything here is adjusted to meet local demand and taste. Nevertheless, there must be one or two hidden gems amongst the 300 items listed in the menu, perhaps in the fish and seafood department, which we will probably try on our next visit, hoping that they will actually be available. Meal for two without vine costs 2,300 dinars. Despite a huge board announcing Great Shanghai which can be seen from afar, you will not be able to find the restaurant unless you happen to find yourself right in front of the tiny entrance within a mini shopping mall next to the Zabac video store.
