A group of NGOs from Kosovo has sent a letter to the EU calling for a revision of the European Commission's visa liberalization recommendation. The European Commission adopted a recommendation last week calling for visa liberalization for Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro by January 2010, while insisting that Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albanian fulfill added conditions before receiving the same recommendation. NGOs warn of Kosovo “ghettoization” Kosovo is not part of this process at all, because five EU member-states do not recognize the province's unilateral independence, according to Balkan Insight. In the letter to the EU, the NGOs state that this decision could lead to Kosovo becoming a ghetto. One of the signatories, Veton Surroi, says that the EU’s decision further isolates Kosovo citizens, and that it is demeaing for Kosovo citizens to have to queue in front of embassies in Pristina or Skopje for visas. Surroi accused the Kosovo government of failing in its task to ensure that Kosovo would be part of the visa liberalization process. Another signatory, Rada Trajkovic, says that the EC’s decision devalues the efforts of people in Kosovo who are trying to create an open and multi-ethnic society.
