Serbs from Brdjani in northern Kosovo have asked EULEX police for permission to begin reconstruction of their houses, just as local Albanians are already doing. Serb representative Sinisa Lazic said that it had been agreed to continue talks tomorrow with the EU mission’s coordinator for northern Kosovo, Michael Charis. Brdjani Serbs demand equal rights According to Lazic, the holding of further Serb protests in the Kosovska Mitrovica suburb will depend on the outcome of this meeting. In the meantime, a hundred or so Serb protestors gathered once again in Brdjani, at the demarcation line between the local Serb and Albanian communities, behind which Albanians have begun reconstruction work on houses destroyed in 1999. Just as the protestors were about to break through the protective cordon at the demarcation line, EULEX police fired tear gas at them to drive them back. Under an agreement signed in 2000, reconstruction work can only begin with the consent of both sides. The Serbs are now seeking reciprocal measures—namely, to be allowed to begin reconstruction work on their homes, located next to Albanian communities. The protests, which began when reconstruction work was launched on five Albanian homes in Brdjani destroyed in 1999, are now almost into their third week.
