Serge Brammertz has welcomed the arrest of Radovan Karadzic, and has canceled his planned visit to Belgrade as a result. The Hague chief prosecutor canceled his visit to Belgrade today after learning of Karadzic’s arrest. Chief Hague prosecutor hails arrest His spokeswoman Olga Kavran said that Brammertz would be closely following further developments in Belgrade. Brammertz congratulated Serbian authorities on behalf of the prosecution, praising in particular the efforts of the National Security Council, the Action Team responsible for tracking down the fugitives, and the Serbian War Crimes Prosecution for this milestone in cooperation with the Hague. “This is a very important day for all the victims that have waited for this arrest for more than a decade. It is an important day for international justice as well, because it clearly shows that no one is beyond the law, and that sooner or later, all the fugitives will be brought to justice,” the prosecutor underlined. In a statement, the Tribunal said that Karadzic had evaded justice for 13 years, since the first indictment was issued on July 24, 1995. The Hague Tribunal announced that the exact date of Karadzic’s transfer to The Hague would be determined soon. Brammertz had been due to visit Belgrade today, but he postponed his visit after Serbian authorities announced that Karadzic had been arrested, his spokeswoman confirmed. The prosecutor would instead be following further developments in Belgrade, in expectation of Karadzic’s speedy transfer to The Hague.

His spokeswoman Olga Kavran said that Brammertz would be closely following further developments in Belgrade.

Brammertz congratulated Serbian authorities on behalf of the prosecution, praising in particular the efforts of the National Security Council, the Action Team responsible for tracking down the fugitives, and the Serbian War Crimes Prosecution for this milestone in cooperation with the Hague.
