Police says many fires raging across Stara Mountain were caused by human carelessness and negligence.

Human negligence - main cause of fires

“Criminal complaints against suspects will be filed soon,” he said.

“The fire near the village of Krupac was accidentally started by a shepherd from the village of Izvor who discarded a cigarette into dry grass,” Madić added.

According to him, police interrogated three beekeepers suspected of causing the fire near the village of Temska by blowing smoke into their beehives.

Several days ago, police detained Letka M. from Pirot as being accountable for the massive fire near the Zavojsko Lake.

“She reportedly lit a heap of dry grass and hay in a backyard of a house near the lake. The blaze rapidly spread onto the nearby pine forest,” Madić explained.

A fire that broke out on the Pirot-Bela Palanka railway was caused by combustion of fuel in a diesel-charged engine as sparks fell onto dry fires.

Pirot Firefighting Department Chief Mile Jovičić confirmed Sunday all fires in the area had been extinguished.
