EU ministers debate Serbia on Monday

The ministers are set to debate and harmonize the differences within the 27-nation union, regarding “content of the message of support for Serbia”.

Sources from the German EU presidency told reporters today that the Council of Ministers will consider the future of the EU relations with Serbia “in light of the fact reform-oriented forces won a clear majority in the recent elections”.

It is based on this that the EU expects swift forming of the next cabinet in Belgrade, one determined to continue “Serbia’s road to Europe, prepared to grapple with challenges ahead in the spirit of constructive cooperation with the international community”.

What this in effect means, Council of Ministers sources said, is that the future Serbian government must show through clear and concrete measures its determination to establish full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal, creating conditions for renewed SAA talks with Brussels.

One German EU presidency official added that the situation in Serbia was “fairly complex”, such that required “all messages to be extremely cautious”.
