He also stated that the EU has already activated a mechanism for emergency response and that, in agreement with the Serbian Interior Ministry, a joint unit was formed to coordinate all actions of EU member states.

"Our teams are working as part of a team of the Serbian police and contributing to the joint efforts," said Davenport.

The European Union has previously activated a mechanism for emergency response, while at this point, according to the diplomat, 14 of the 28 EU member-states are taking part.

Their services for emergency interventions were engaged already in the first hours after the onset of the flooding, he noted.

"They are in Lazarevac, Ub, Šabac, Obrenovac," said Davenport.

The head of the EU delegation added that he was aware that recovery from the floods would bring with it high costs, and that the EU was ready to offer financial assistance:

"We have the funds but now we need to define what is most important and do what fits true needs."

Ambassador Davenport and the staff of the EU Delegation also made their personal contribution to help the flood victims.

They accepted an invitation of the B92 Fund and brought a substantial amount of canned food and hygiene products to the REX Cinema in Jeverjska Street in Belgrade.

Davenport noted that he was impressed with the work of national rescue services, and the solidarity shown by citizens who are collecting aid for the most vulnerable.

The diplomat said he had a chance to learn about it for himself at the center in the REX Cinema, and added: "We are proud to be part of the overall action."
