BELGRADE PM Ivica Dacic has stated that the government elected by the citizens to open the door to the EU "achieved its goal and thus won its first important battle." At an open, "thematic" session of the Serbian government on Thursday, dealing with the initiation of the EU accession talks, Dacic said that the success was achieved thanks to everyone in the government and Serbian citizens as well. Dacic: Government has achieved its goal “We won our first and highly important battle and we have done all that we could to win it because the government was constituted to achieve this and every member of the government and every citizen can be proud of it,” the prime minister said. Citizens elected the government which would open the door to the EU for the country and they got what they wanted, Dacic said and underscored that citizens' votes were not wasted for the first time. “The government simply did its job and performed its duties and the goals it was elected to fulfil, and it thus set the standards which all future governments will have to live up to,” the prime minister said. “The government's first task was to do all it can to improve the country's position in terms of foreign policy, to put an end to lies in communication and tell the truth openly to all in Serbia and the world regardless of the consequences,” Dacic said. He underscored that the government wished to protect national interests and create conditions for a normal life in Serbia, and the only way to do this was through the talks with those against whom the country fought wars up until recently. “This is what we have done,” the prime minister said.
