Czech position on Kosovo unchanged

However, Czech ambassador to Serbia Ivan Jestrab reacted to this by pointing out there were no changes in his country’s position regarding Kosovo, while the announcement of a possible recognition of a unilaterally-declared independence was “journalistic interpretation”, rather than an actual statement given by the Czech foreign minister.

“First we need to see the Ahtisaari proposal. We will actively negotiate that document in the EU and we favor the EU to adopt a stance, if at all possible a common stance, in relation to that proposal”, Jestrab told Beta.

The ambassador also said that the Czech Republic wasn’t even considering the issue of recognizing Kosovo’s independence since that question is not currently topping the agenda .

Speaking about NATO’s invitation to Serbia to join Partnership for Peace, ambassador Jestrab said that his country was very pleased with the development and announced the Czech assistance to Serbia’s future Euro-Atlantic integrations.

The Czech ambassador to Serbia added that he hoped Kosovo’s status will soon be resolved.

“It is now under Ahtisaari’s jurisdiction and we expect his proposal after the elections [in Serbia]”.
